Medical

At Olney Infant Academy, the health, safety and wellbeing of every child is at the heart of everything we do. We know that when your child has a medical condition, allergy or requires medication during the school day, trusting others with their care can sometimes feel worrying. We want families to feel confident that we will work closely with you to understand your child's individual needs and help them to participate fully and safely in school life.

We have clear arrangements in place for first aid, administering medicines, managing medical conditions and responding to allergies and anaphylaxis. Where appropriate, we work with parents, carers and healthcare professionals to put an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP) in place so that everyone involved in your child's care understands the support they need.

First Aid

We have arrangements in place to ensure children receive appropriate first aid if they become ill or are injured during the school day.

Our provision includes trained staff, first-aid equipment within school and portable first-aid kits for activities away from the school site. Our provision is reviewed to take account of children's individual needs, including SEND and medical needs.

Parents and carers will be informed when appropriate following an accident, illness or injury. Head injuries are recorded and parents/carers are informed on the same day

Allergies and Anaphylaxis

The new statutory guidance requires schools to have and publish an Allergy Safety Policy, provide appropriate allergy safety training for staff, identify children who require an Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP) for their allergy, and appropriately record and learn from serious incidents and near misses.

At Olney Infant Academy, we take allergies seriously and work in partnership with families to reduce risks and ensure appropriate arrangements are in place.

If your child has a known or suspected allergy, please tell us. It is particularly important to let us know if your child:

  • has been diagnosed with an allergy;
  • has previously experienced a significant allergic reaction;
  • has been prescribed an adrenaline auto-injector (AAI);
  • has had a change to their allergy or treatment plan; or
  • is undergoing assessment for a suspected allergy.

Where appropriate, an Individual Healthcare Plan will be developed to clearly set out your child's needs and the arrangements required to support them safely in school. It is essential that your care plan provided by your medical professional in your child's care is shared with school, as part of this.

Our existing first-aid arrangements also include regular checks of emergency medication, including AAIs

Supporting Children with Medical Conditions

We want children with medical conditions to be able to participate fully and safely in school life.

Where a child has a medical condition requiring additional support, we will work with parents/carers and relevant healthcare professionals to determine the arrangements they need. This may include an Individual Healthcare Plan.

Medicines in School

If your child needs medication during the school day, please speak to the school office.Please do not send medication into school without discussing the appropriate arrangements with us. This helps us make sure medicines are received, stored, administered and recorded safely.If your child's medication, dosage or treatment subsequently changes, please let us know as soon as possible.

Working Together With Families

You know your child best, and good communication between home and school is an important part of keeping them safe and well.

Please let us know if:

  • your child develops a new medical condition or allergy;
  • there is a change to an existing condition;
  • their medication, dosage or treatment plan changes;
  • they are prescribed an adrenaline auto-injector or other emergency medication; or
  • there is anything else about their health that may affect them during the school day.

Our aim is simple: for every child to feel safe, included and able to enjoy all that school life has to offer.

If you would like to discuss your child's medical needs, please contact the school office. We will always be happy to talk things through with you.
